It provides a specialist service to drug users and their families within the Renfrewshire Council boundaries. RDS accepts referrals from all sources, the main source being from the user themselves, GP’s and Social Work. There is no age restriction. The project accepts referrals from users of all substances, apart from alcohol only, the main substance of referral being heroin.
The main services that the project provides are individual counselling, prescribing clinics, harm reduction services, GP shared care, groupwork, family support and advice and information. The project also has two Young Person’s Workers who work with young people up to the age of 18, although the main age of referral is under 16. There are also a Co-morbidity Nurse and Drug Worker who work with users who have both a drug problem and a severe and enduring mental illness. The project attempts to focus on the more chaotic and vulnerable user both in relation to their physical and mental health and their social circumstances. It also prioritises those users with child care issues.
The opening hours of RDS are 8.45a.m. - 4.45p.m. Monday - Thursday and 8.45 a.m. - 3.55 p.m. on a Friday. Appointments can also be arranged on a Monday evening for users who have difficulty accessing the project during the day. A duty service is in operation during the opening hours.
The aim of the team is to provide an integrated and accessible service using a holistic evidence based approach. This will be provided in an environment which is safe and respectful and encourages individuals to fulfill their full potential.
Philosophy of Care
The philosophy of Renfrewshire Drug Service is to maintain clients in the community to reduce physical, psychological, social and legal problems which are associated with substance misuse and drug dependence.
The service supports clients in working towards abstinence from drugs or in controlling their drug use.
If an individual wishes to pursue residential rehabilitation to help them acheive their goals, the project will assist in completing an application for a residential placement where appropriate.
The project promotes multdisciplinary working and care plans are developed in collaboration with the client. Interventions are provided on a groupwork or an individual basis.
Service user involvement is fundamental to the overall direction and philosophy of the project.
