Clyde Mental Health Strategy
Around one in four of us will experience a mental illness at some point in our lives. When this happens having access to the right treatment and support is vital to help people recover as soon as possible. Service users have told us that, wherever possible, they would prefer to be treated in their own home or in local community facilities.
Over the last year, as part of a wider review of health services across Clyde, we carried out a detailed review of local mental health services involving service users, carers and community groups.
This gave us the chance to look at services currently available, identify gaps and explore what needed to be done to further develop and improve local services. The review found that although there are many examples of good quality mental health services in Inverclyde, historically there has been a lack of investment in community-based services. It means that people living in Inverclyde are currently not able to access the same range and type of community based services as those living in Greater Glasgow.
After completing the review, a strategy was developed to develop and improve mental health services across Clyde. This strategy includes plans to redesign inpatient and specialist mental health services.
Public Engagement on theses plans started on the 9th April and ends 2nd July 2008. Implementation of these plans is well underway.
The plans are:
- The creation of Primary Care Mental Health Team with workers linked to each GP Practice. This will be in place by May 2010.
- The strengthening of the Community Mental Health Team for adults has been completed.
- The introduction of an out of hours service will be implemented towards the end of 2010. The SSPU has transferred to Ravenscraig in the interim.
- The IPCU intensive psychiatric care unit will transfer to Inverclyde in March 2010.
- The proposals for partnership continuing care beds for older people with mental health needs is due to be completed by January 2012.
- In terms of the addictions the alcohol services will transfer off Ravenscraig to the Wellpark building in May 2010. This will provide a single point of access for Inverclyde residents.
- The Inverclyde drug services will transfer to renovated premises in Cathcart Street in July 2010. This will provide a single point of access for Inverclyde residents.
- Crown House was opened in December 2009 as the Mental Health Centre for Inverclyde and all of the non-ward based staff at Ravenscraig now operate from these premises.
- The Ravenscraig Hospital site is due to close in 2012.
The consultation meetings have been very well attended by service users, carers and voluntary agencies. One of the main outcomes from the public engagement event on 14th May 2008 was to arrange a visit to see partnership accommodation in Glasgow.
